Stabilization of Tilt Order by Chain Flexibility in Langmuir Monolayers
نویسنده
چکیده
Langmuir monolayers are modeled as systems of short chains, which are confined to a planar surface at one end, but free to move within the plane. The phase behavior is calculated in a mean field approximation, which combines the self consistent field method with elements of classical density functional theory. It is shown that phases with tilt order are unstable in systems of stiff chains, but can be stabilized by chain conformational entropy in systems of sufficiently flexible chains. The chain entropy is also responsible for the appearance of an additional untilted phase, the liquid expanded phase. The region of stability of the different phases is discussed, and their microscopic structure is analyzed in some detail. PACS numbers: 64.75, 68.18, 68.35

Langmuir monolayers as disordered solids: Strain-tilt-backbone coupling and natural order parameters for the swiveling transitions" (1999). Multistability of Langmuir monolayers, in particular those composed of fatty acids, is reflected by a very rich and complicated phase diagram. We argue that strain-tilt-backbone coupling determines the behavior described by that diagram. Following the solid...
متن کاملChain-length dependence of the conformational order in self-assembled dialkylammonium monolayers on mica studied with soft X-ray absorption.
Self-assembled alkyl chain based monolayers on mica are important for industrial and technological processes since they can be employed for an organic modification of the inorganic substrate. The conformational structure and orientational order of the films determine the interaction of the modified substrate with the environment and the chemical character and stability of its surface. We have s...
متن کاملBond-orientational order in Langmuir-Blodgett surfactant monolayers
Cadmium stearate surfactant molecules assembled into monolayers by the Langmuir-Blodgett method exhibit bond-orientational order. Bond-orientational correlations extend over macroscopic distances on the order of a millimeter while translational correlations decay on a scale of tens of angstroms. The long axis of the molecules are tilted away from the surface normal but the tilt direction is dis...
متن کاملAlignment by Langmuir/Schaefer Monolayers of Bent-Core Liquid Crystals
Langmuir films of bent-core molecules at the air/water interface are transferred onto a solid surface by the inverse-Langmuir-Schaefer (ILS) technique. Previous work by the authors demonstrated that ILS films of a symmetric bent-core molecule can serve as effective planar alignment layers for a nematic bent-core liquid crystal cell, but the Langmuir films were unstable and formed multilayers at...

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were prepared on gold substrates from an unsymmetrical partially fluorinated spiroalkanedithiol adsorbate with the specific structure of [CH3(CH2)7][CF3(CF2)7(CH2)8]C[CH2SH]2 (SADT) and compared to SAMs formed from the semifluorinated monothiol F8H10SH [CF3(CF2)7(CH2)10SH] of analogous chain length and n-octadecanethiol. The adsorbate with two alkyl chains, one ...
